Best NBA Slam Dunker of All-Time

ESPN.com had a poll the other day that asked who people thought was the best slam dunker of all-time, if they were all in the prime of their careers.  Some of the options were Dominique Wilkins, Julius Erving, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, and Michael Jordan.  I made my selection and was very surprised to see that who I had chosen was not who the majority of the people picked.  Here is why I think Vince Carter is the best slam dunker of all-time.

First of all, I narrowed my choice down by process of elimination.  Wilkins was a power dunker and was able to finish strong in traffic.  He did not have the flair to his dunks that the others do, which is why he is not the best.  That was the easy one to get out of the way.

Kobe and Dr. J both had their fair share of great dunks.  Dr. J could flat out soar while Kobe’s creativity in dunking is up there with the best of them.  However, Erving and Kobe simply are not on the same level as Jordan and Carter in terms of dunking.

This is where the discrepancy takes place.  Fourty-four percent of the people selected Michael Jordan as the best of all-time, while 26% chose Vince Carter.  I am as big of a Micahel Jordan fan as anyone out there, (and yes, he is the greatest player of ever) but there is no way he was a better dunker than Vince Carter.  Jordan was a fantastic all-around player and it is hard not to give him the title of “best ever” for each facet of his game.  In Vince Carter’s athletic prime, he was basically just a dunker, that is what he did.  Carter has more highlight reel dunks than anyone who has played in the NBA.  Whether he was in a Slam Dunk Competition, an NBA game, or jumping over people who stand 7’2″, Carter always found a way to make you say “wow.”

  1. I have to go with Vince Carter, simply for that dunk. All of the people listed have a collection of great dunks in their careers, but this dunk by Carter is the seperation between all of them. MJ was the first to go from the foul line, now we see that in high school dunk contests. Dr. J may be the smoothest of all time, but now even his form can be repeated. Dominique defined flying high, and brought the vertical into the NBA, but now there are lots of guys with big time air. It’s my opinion that until someone does something to match the sheer power and ability of jumping over a 7 foot man, Vince has got to be the best. Believe me, he is not my favorite baller on the list, nor is he close to being the best on the list. But when it comes to strictly dunking the basketball, Vince takes the cake.

If you havn’t seen the video of the guy doing the 720 you should check it out. He did it in an And 1 game and now has done it other times, such as on The Best Damn Sport Show Period’s 50 Greatest Dunks ever.

  2. Yeah I have seen him do the 720 both times, which is amazing. He would definitely be up on the list of potential best dunkers…if he were in the NBA.

  5. I suppose I will give the edge to Vince as well. I think, however, if Jordan had wanted to he could have been better. He just chose to develop other facets of his game and win 6 rings instead.

  11. It’s over some ‘white statue like guy’, impressive but hardly like in an NBA playoff game.

BUT vince is right up there with D-Wade, MJ, Spudd, Dom, Kobe, Doc-J, Kemp and others…

  12. Vince Carter.when he was Air Canada. 360s, windmills, jumping over 7-footers, between the legs dunking, elbow in the rim, he’s the best dunker ever! Jordan has nothing on VC when it comes to dunking. jordan and lebron will never know how to spin 360 dunk and windmill dunk……
